ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS
A CLEARER PATH TO CARE

High-quality medicine starts with a thorough understanding of each patient’s health. At CHEW, advanced laboratory testing and digital imaging reveal what a physical examination alone cannot. These tools help our veterinarians uncover underlying concerns, guide treatment, and assess risks before anesthesia, supporting informed medical decisions and safer patient care.
Our mission is to make high-quality veterinary medicine more accessible. Affordability should never mean that diagnostic information or patient safety matters less. We invest in advanced technology because every animal deserves thoughtful, thorough care and our medical team deserves the tools to provide it.
BLOOD CHEMISTRY: UNDERSTANDING ORGAN HEALTH
IDEXX Catalyst One Chemistry Analyzer
Blood chemistry testing helps us evaluate kidney and liver health, blood sugar, proteins, and electrolytes. These results provide clues about what may be causing a pet’s symptoms and help us monitor ongoing medical conditions.
Having this technology at CHEW means our veterinarians can receive results in minutes to guide treatment, assess concerns before anesthesia, and make adjustments as a patient’s needs change. It is an important tool for understanding what is happening beyond the physical examination.
COMPLETE BLOOD COUNTS: A CLOSER LOOK AT BLOOD CELLS
IDEXX ProCyte One Hematology Analyzer
A complete blood count, or CBC, evaluates red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It helps our veterinarians investigate anemia, changes associated with inflammation or infection, and concerns involving the cells that support clotting.
With results available in minutes, we can use this information alongside the examination and other tests to evaluate sick patients, prepare for surgery, and monitor recovery.
CELLULAR ANALYSIS: LOOKING BEYOND THE NUMBERS
IDEXX inVue Dx Cellular Analyzer
This technology helps us examine important details about cells. It can analyze ear samples for bacteria, yeast, and signs of inflammation, and provide additional information about blood cell appearance that complements a CBC.
For patients with painful or recurring ear problems, identifying what is present helps guide treatment. For patients with blood abnormalities, a closer look at cell characteristics can help our veterinarians determine what needs further investigation.
URINE SEDIMENT ANALYSIS: FINDING MICROSCOPIC CLUES
IDEXX SediVue Dx Urine Sediment Analyzer
A urine sample can reveal important information about urinary tract health. SediVue Dx examines the sample for microscopic elements, including blood cells, bacteria, crystals, and casts, which can provide clues about kidney conditions.
We use these findings to investigate urinary symptoms and guide next steps, which may include treatment, imaging, or a urine culture. Detailed digital images also allow our team to review what is present in the sample.
URINE CHEMISTRY: ANOTHER PIECE OF THE PICTURE
IDEXX VetLab UA Analyzer
This analyzer measures urine chemistry, including pH, protein, glucose, ketones, and blood. It complements urine sediment analysis by examining a different set of indicators.
Together with other urine measurements and blood testing, these results help our veterinarians investigate urinary concerns and conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease. Automated strip reading supports consistent interpretation.
RAPID SCREENING: CONSISTENT RESULTS WHEN THEY MATTER
IDEXX SNAP Pro Analyzer
SNAP Pro automatically activates, times, and reads compatible SNAP tests. These rapid tests help our team screen for selected diseases and conditions, depending on the test ordered.
Automating these steps supports consistent testing and reduces the chance of timing or reading errors. Our veterinarians interpret the results alongside your pet’s history and examination and recommend additional testing when needed.
CONNECTED RESULTS: BRINGING THE FINDINGS TOGETHER
IDEXX VetLab Station
Our laboratory systems connect through the IDEXX VetLab Station, which brings in-house results together in one place.
This helps our team review findings across different tests and understand how they fit together. It supports organized, informed care when several diagnostic tests are needed for the same patient.
DIGITAL X-RAYS: SEEING BEYOND THE EXAMINATION
IDEXX ImageVue DR50 Digital Imaging System
Digital X-rays help our veterinarians examine bones, joints, the chest, and the abdomen. They provide important information when evaluating injuries, orthopedic concerns, and changes involving internal organs.
Detailed digital images support diagnosis, surgical planning, and follow-up care. They can also be shared for additional professional review when needed.
DIGITAL DENTAL X-RAYS: REVEALING WHAT IS HIDDEN BENEATH THE GUMS
A tooth can look healthy on the surface while disease is developing underneath. Digital dental X-rays allow our veterinarians to evaluate tooth roots and surrounding bone, revealing problems that an examination alone may miss.
At CHEW, this technology helps us identify hidden sources of pain, make informed treatment decisions, and evaluate teeth before and after extractions. For our patients, that means more thorough dental care focused on comfort and long-term oral health.
IN-OPERATING-ROOM X-RAYS: SUPPORTING SURGICAL PRECISION
Having X-ray equipment in our operating room allows our surgical team to obtain images during a procedure, providing additional information when it matters.
During orthopedic surgery, these images can help assess bone alignment and the placement of surgical implants. Access to imaging in the operating room supports informed decisions and allows the surgeon to evaluate the repair before the procedure is complete.
SPECIALIZED TESTING BEYOND OUR HOSPITAL
Some conditions require testing beyond an in-house laboratory. CHEW submits samples to outside laboratories selected for each patient’s needs, giving our veterinarians access to specialized tests and additional diagnostic expertise.
Texas A&M Gastrointestinal Laboratory
Specialized testing helps our veterinarians investigate digestive concerns, including conditions affecting the intestines and pancreas. This can provide additional answers for pets with persistent or complex gastrointestinal symptoms.
Cornell University Animal Health Diagnostic Center
Cornell offers a broad range of diagnostic testing supported by veterinary expertise and consultation. These resources help our team investigate conditions that require more specialized evaluation.
IDEXX Reference Laboratories
IDEXX provides expanded laboratory testing, including pathology, infectious disease testing, and cultures. These services help us investigate complex cases, evaluate tissue and cell samples, and guide treatment decisions.
MiraVista Veterinary Diagnostics
MiraVista specializes in testing for systemic fungal infections and offers monitoring for certain antifungal treatments. This provides valuable support when a fungal disease is suspected or a patient needs ongoing treatment monitoring.
Antech Diagnostics
Antech provides expanded laboratory testing, including bloodwork, cultures, and pathology. These services help our veterinarians investigate medical concerns, monitor ongoing conditions, and obtain additional information when in-house testing is only the first step.
Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories
Colorado State offers diagnostic testing that helps our veterinarians investigate disease and evaluate complex cases. Access to university laboratory resources gives our patients additional options when specialized testing is needed.
Minnesota Urolith Center
When a pet has urinary stones, understanding their composition is an important part of planning ongoing care. The Minnesota Urolith Center analyzes stones to identify the minerals they contain.
These findings help our veterinarians recommend treatment, dietary changes, and monitoring tailored to the stone type, with the goal of reducing the risk of recurrence.
Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL)
TVMDL provides a broad range of testing to help investigate animal diseases. Our veterinarians can use these services when a patient needs additional testing beyond our in-house capabilities.
TVMDL complements the Texas A&M Gastrointestinal Laboratory, providing another resource for investigating medical concerns and guiding care.
ANSWERS THAT SUPPORT OUR MISSION
Behind every diagnostic test is an animal depending on us to make the right decisions. These tools help our veterinarians uncover hidden disease, understand risks, and determine the next step with greater confidence.
For families, that means a clearer path forward when their pet needs help. For rescue partners and referring veterinarians, it means access to advanced diagnostics that can put treatment within reach.
For our supporters, this is your generosity at work: equipping a nonprofit hospital to deliver thorough, informed care to animals whose options might otherwise be limited. You help make high-quality medicine possible for the patients who need it most.
